Symptoms
Common Refrigerator Problems and What Causes Them
Most fridge calls come down to a handful of parts. Here is what usually causes each problem, and what you can safely check first.
| What you notice | Likely cause | Safe check before you call |
|---|---|---|
| Fridge is warm, freezer still cold | Failed evaporator fan, or frost blocking the air path after a defrost failure | Open the freezer and listen. No fan sound with the door switch pressed points to the fan |
| Both sections are warm | Condenser fan, dusty condenser coils, start relay, compressor or a refrigerant leak | Check the breaker and outlet, then clean the coils if they are covered in dust |
| Water on the floor or under the crisper drawers | Clogged defrost drain, cracked drain pan, or a leaking water inlet valve or supply line | Turn off the water valve behind the fridge if the line is dripping |
| Frost or ice building up in the freezer | Torn door gasket, or a failed defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control | Close the door on a dollar bill. If it slides out easily, the seal is weak |
| Ice maker stopped making ice | Frozen fill tube, water inlet valve, ice maker assembly or an overdue water filter | Make sure the ice maker is switched on and the filter is not past due |
| Clicks, hums, then shuts off | Start relay, overload or compressor | Unplug it and call. Repeated restarts can damage the compressor |
| Loud buzzing, grinding or rattling | Evaporator or condenser fan motor, or a loose drain pan | Note whether the noise happens with the door open or closed |
Before the visit
Five Safe Checks Before You Book a Fridge Repair
- Check the power. Look for a tripped breaker and test the outlet with a lamp or phone charger.
- Check the settings. Dials get bumped. The USDA recommends a refrigerator at 40°F or below and a freezer at 0°F.
- Clear the vents. Food pushed against the vents inside blocks cold air from reaching the fridge section.
- Clean the condenser coils. On models with coils at the bottom or back, dust and pet hair make the compressor work harder.
- Give it time after an outage. When power comes back, a fridge needs a few hours to pull back down to temperature.
Detroit factors
Why Detroit Fridges Fail When They Do
DTE outages and storms
On September 3, 2026, an EF-2 tornado tracked from Poletown East across Islandview to Belle Isle, and more than 90,000 DTE customers were still without power days later. Outages and the surge when power returns are a common time for control boards and start relays to fail.
Food safety without power
A closed refrigerator keeps food safe for about 4 hours. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours, a half-full one for about 24. Keep the doors shut and check temperatures before eating anything.
Hot summers, cold garages
July highs reach the low 80s with high humidity, so compressors run longer. In winter, a fridge in an unheated garage can stop cooling the fresh-food side because the cold room fools its thermostat.
Hard water and ice makers
Detroit tap water averaged 100 ppm of hardness in DWSD’s 2024 report. Over time minerals build up in water inlet valves and ice maker fill tubes, which slows or stops ice production.
Repair or replace
Is Your Refrigerator Worth Repairing?
Fans, relays, gaskets, defrost parts, valves and ice makers are usually worth repairing. A failed compressor or a refrigerant leak on an older fridge often is not. A common rule of thumb: if the repair costs more than half the price of a comparable new fridge and the unit is past the middle of its working life, replacing usually makes more sense. The National Association of Home Builders puts the typical life of a refrigerator at about 13 years.

FAQ
Questions Detroit customers ask
Why is my fridge warm but the freezer is cold?
Cold air reaches the fridge section from the freezer. When the evaporator fan fails or frost blocks the air path after a defrost failure, the freezer stays cold while the fridge warms up. Both are common, repairable faults.
How long does food stay safe in a fridge without power?
About 4 hours if the door stays closed. A full freezer holds for about 48 hours and a half-full freezer for about 24 hours. Throw out perishable food that has been above 40°F for more than 2 hours.
Is it worth repairing a 10-year-old refrigerator?
Often, if the problem is a fan, relay, gasket, valve or defrost part. If the compressor has failed or the sealed system is leaking, replacing an older fridge usually makes more sense. We will tell you which side of that line you are on.
Why is there water under my refrigerator?
The usual causes are a clogged defrost drain, a cracked drain pan, or a leaking water inlet valve or supply line to the ice maker. Turn off the water valve behind the fridge if you can reach it safely.
Do you repair ice makers and water dispensers?
Yes. We fix ice makers that stop making ice, overfill or leak, and dispensers that stop working, including frozen fill tubes and failed inlet valves.
