Quick checks

Safe Checks Before You Call

  1. Induction: hold a magnet to the bottom of the pan. If it does not stick firmly, the pan will not work on induction.
  2. Gas: after a spill, let the burner and igniter dry completely and seat the cap evenly before trying again.
  3. Coil: swap the dead coil with a working one of the same size. If the swapped coil heats, the original coil failed.
  4. Cracked glass: stop using that cooktop and switch it off at the breaker. Spills can reach live parts through the crack.

Smell gas? Leave the house, then call 911 and DTE’s Gas Leak Hotline at 800-947-5000 from outside.

FAQ

Questions Detroit customers ask

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?

The glass itself cannot be patched. The fix is replacing the glass top, which on many models also means new seals. Depending on the model and its age, replacing the whole cooktop can cost about the same.

Why won’t my induction cooktop detect my pan?

Induction only works with magnetic cookware. If a magnet does not stick firmly to the bottom of the pan, it will not heat. If the pan is magnetic and the cooktop still shows an error, a sensor or the power board may have failed.

Why does my gas burner keep clicking?

Usually moisture got into the spark switch or igniter after a spill or cleaning. Let it dry fully. If it keeps clicking once dry, the spark switch or module needs to be replaced.
