Detroit factors

Detroit Water and Your Dishwasher

Moderately hard water

Detroit tap water averaged 100 ppm of hardness in DWSD’s 2024 report, with a range of 74 to 114 ppm. That is moderately hard. Over time it leaves scale on spray arms, heating elements and inlet valves, which shows up as cloudy glasses and weak cleaning.

Storms and sewer backups

During heavy rain, DWSD has asked residents to hold off on running dishwashers and washers so the sewer system has room. If water backs up into your sink or dishwasher during a storm, stop running it and report the backup to DWSD at 313-267-8000.

Repair or replace

Is Your Dishwasher Worth Repairing?

Pumps, float switches, inlet valves, latches, gaskets and heating elements are usually worth repairing on a dishwasher that is a few years old. The National Association of Home Builders puts the typical life of a dishwasher at about 9 years, shorter than most kitchen appliances. On an older unit with a failed control board or a leaking tub, replacing it usually makes more sense. Read the repair or replace guide.

We repair built-in and drawer dishwashers from Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Frigidaire, Bosch, Thermador, Kenmore and more. See all brands.

FAQ

Questions Detroit customers ask

Why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

A clogged filter is the most common cause, followed by a failed drain pump, a kinked drain hose or a blocked disposal connection. Clean the filter first. If water still sits in the tub, the pump or hose needs attention.

Why are my glasses cloudy?

Usually mineral scale from hard water or too little rinse aid. Keep the rinse aid topped up and run a dishwasher cleaner monthly. If glasses are etched rather than filmed, the damage is permanent.

Why is my dishwasher leaking?

Common causes are a worn door gasket, a stuck float switch, a leaking pump seal, or hand soap creating suds. Turn off power and water to the dishwasher and call before running it again.

How long should a dishwasher last?

About 9 years on average, according to the National Association of Home Builders. Many last longer with regular filter cleaning.
